Welcome to: South Carolina
One of the original 13 States, South Carolina is bookended by natural splendor. With the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and some of the best beaches in the continental United States to the east, this southern state proudly shows off America the Beautiful.
The two largest native tribes originally settled here were the Catawba and the Cherokee. Europeans settled on the land as early as 1670, making South Carolina one the original colonies to eventually become the United States. South Carolina joined the Union on May 23, 1788.
An important piece of American history happened here when the confederates attacked Fort Sumter. The Civil War officially began in the Palmetto State in April of 1861. Ultimately, South Carolina would be the first state to secede from the Union, only to be readmitted in 1868.
